HVAC Maintenance Tips for Colder Months

When the cold seasons of the year are heading in, it’s always a good idea to check your HVAC system. A broken HVAC system in winter means a cold, cold house, one in which you have to wear heavy clothing throughout the day. So, let’s get into some tips for ensuring your HVAC system is operating at top efficiency, before the cold sweeps in!

What is “HVAC”?

First of all, let’s clarify the term “HVAC”, for those of you who don’t already know. HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

Filter Replacement and Vent Cleaning

These are some of the easiest things to do to keep your HVAC system running in good condition, and you can do them yourself. Make sure you replace your filters and clean your vents before winter arrives. It’s recommended to replace filters every three months at the longest. Old and clogged filters drastically increase the amount of energy the air pump sucks up as it tries to drag air through the filter. The same goes, in the other direction, for dust-filled vents. (Plus, cleaning your vents and replacing your filter helps avoid the unpleasant odor of burning dust!)

Check Your Registers

Some areas in your home may not need as much heating. If this is the case, consider closing some of the registers (vents), though closing too many may cause air pressure imbalance and hurt your system’s efficiency.

Reprogram Your Thermostat

If you have a programmable thermostat, you should lower the set temperature when you don’t need your home to be as warm, such as when you’re going on vacation and nobody will be home. If you don’t have one, get one! Using a programmable thermostat properly can decrease your energy bill considerably.

Professional Inspection and Service

It’s advised to have your HVAC system inspected by HVAC professionals every year, and to have any necessary service performed. This minimizes the chance of your HVAC system breaking down in the middle of the cold times of the year.

System Replacement

If you have an old HVAC system, at a decade or older, it’s worthwhile to consider replacing it. Sure, it’s an expensive undertaking, but a newer, fresher system will be less likely to break down or have problems, and newer models are much more efficient, taking a large chunk out of your electricity bill or reducing how often you need propane refills.
